DESCRIPTION:This neighborhood tour is an education collaboration with the P
 ittsburgh History and Landmarks Foundation. \nStudents will be guided on a
  tour of the Penn-Liberty corridor in Downtown Pittsburgh. This was an imp
 ortant retail\, commercial\, and entertainment center in the 19th and earl
 y 20th centuries. The Historic District—designated as such at both the C
 ity and Federal levels in 1987 and later expanded—encompasses a large se
 ction of the Penn-Liberty corridor\, including the Cultural District. It f
 eatures outstanding examples of historic buildings ranging from early skys
 crapers to more modest cast-iron-front buildings to spaces that offered va
 udeville shows\, many of them designed by the area’s most significant ar
 chitects.\n\nFollowing a decades-long period of decline in the mid-20th ce
 ntury\, the district has experienced substantial revitalization in the las
 t 30 years\, thanks in large part to historic preservation. Tour participa
 nts will see great architecture and learn about the district’s history.\
