Located on part of the land set aside by the Pennsylvania legislature in the 1780s to pay veterans of the Revolutionary War, Fineview is a secluded neighborhood with a surprising architectural and historical legacy. On a vigorous walk through this hillside community, you will see breathtaking views of the city and learn about the origins of suburbia, the influence of 19th-century designers A. J. Downing and A. J. Davis, and the reforming mission that guided the development of one of Pittsburgh’s earliest public housing projects. We also will see the results of PHLF’s varied efforts to preserve two exemplary Gothic Revival homes constructed between 1855 and 1860.
Come for the view, and leave with an understanding of how convents, cemeteries, and Carpenter Gothic shaped this hilltop community!
NOTE: Due to the very steep terrain, this tour is not handicap accessible.
Tour Meeting Point: Fineview Overlook, corner of Meadville and Catoma Streets, Pittsburgh, 15212
